Since the device resembles a clock, Lara consults a clock expert friend of her father's, Mr. Bryce probes it and discovers a strange device hidden inside the clock.
Searching for it, she discovers a secret chamber under the staircase with a carriage clock that had spontaneously begun ticking. Later that night, Lara has a dream reminding her what her father said about the alignment and an object linked to it called the Triangle of Light. May 15, as Hilly is aware, is the day that Lara's father disappeared many years earlier. Lara's butler, James "Hilly" Hillary (Chris Barrie), tries to interest her in several projects but she ignores them. Powell (Iain Glen), an Illuminati member, makes assurances that they are almost ready, but in reality he has no idea where to find the key. In Venice, the Illuminati search for a key to rejoin halves of "the triangle", which must be done by the final phase of the alignment. It is the day of the first phase of a planetary alignment, culminating in a solar eclipse, which (in the film) happens once every 5,000 years. Now it is revealed that the scene took place in a practice arena in her home, and that her assistant Bryce (Noah Taylor) programmed the robot, SIMON, to challenge her in combat. She takes the diamond, which is revealed to be a memory card labeled "Lara's Party Mix", and inserts it into a laptop computer inside the robot, whereupon it plays music. After an intense chase and battle, she disables it by ripping out its motivational circuits. As she approaches she is attacked by a large robot. The film opens with Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) in an Egyptian tomb, seeking a diamond at one end of a chamber. A sequel, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, was released in 2003. Tomb Raider was the highest-grossing film on its opening weekend. The film received generally negative reviews for its stylized action and bland plot, although Angelina Jolie was praised for her performance as Lara Croft. The film revolves around Lara Croft trying to obtain ancient artifacts from the enemy, the Illuminati. The film was directed by Simon West and was released during the summer of 2001.

This Lara isn't a seasoned pro like Jolie's version, but instead a strong-willed 20-something with massive potential.
It has the grit and realism that many audiences demand these days.ĭirected by Roar Uthaug ( The Wave), this film sees Lara Croft as a tough young woman who chooses to be a broke bike courier, rather than gaining her sizeable inheritance by accepting that her missing father is dead, and signing-off on his death certificate. It’s fair to say the original Tomb Raider had its time and place, but the new iteration is made for a new generation. But Vikander gives a strong performance in one of the better video game adaptations. Vikander would have to deliver a pretty dismal portrayal for us to choose Jolie's Lara Croft over hers. RELATED: Tomb Raider Misses the Point of Lara Croft's Story Possibly the most redeeming aspect of this film was the casting of Jolie’s real-life father, legendary actor Jon Voight, as Lord Richard Croft. The opening scene in which she neutralizes her training robot was memorable for all the wrong reasons.
However, Jolie’s acting was almost comedic at times. Her appearance and demeanor matched well with that of the game's fan-favorite archaeologist-adventurer. When the game was adapted for film five years later, many thought Jolie’s casting was perfect. Lara Croft's trademarks were her twin extended 9mm pistols and skimpy athletic wear. The original 1996 Tomb Raider game is basically a spin on Indiana Jones, with a female protagonist, but the innovative gameplay is what made the title stand out.
